Would a longer swing be better?

Distance is the thing many golfers want when on course. In recent years there has been a big change in the backswing. Would a longer swing be better?

According to PGA Mark Chambers, he believes that over the past 20 years, we have seen a big change in the backswing becoming shorter and the distance becoming much longer from even the top professional players, amateur as well as professional.

There are many different ways to swing, but making the most of the main muscle groups when swinging is essential. Most amateur golfers have long swings and their bodies are somewhat unstable because they have not created torque when rotating their bodies. To create good power we need to have a good foundation such as the legs. Basically, when we backswing, if the legs and hips do not rotate much and the upper body rotates to the maximum, this helps create torque, which in turn creates power.

A streamlined swing not only helps us become stronger but also increases stability. The difficult part of a shorter swing is timing the movement, but if the arms and body can move at the same time, it will give us more control. Today we have many great examples of a short, streamlined backswing. John Rahm, JB Holmes, Tony Finau are a few examples, they are all very powerful hitters. Try to make your backswing shorter, firmer and then release power.
